| The safest year of flying - 2007 |
Last year there were 136 serious flying accidents around the world, making it one of the safest in more than 4 decades, the Aircraft Crashes Record Office says.
ACRO, a private company that documents air disasters, said 965 people died last year in accidents involving planes big enough to carry at least 6 passengers plus crew. This was 25% less than in 2006.
The total accidents causing severe damage to an aircraft, 136, was the lowest since 1963.
The biggest accidents last year were the crash of a TAM Brasil flight in Sao Paulo on July 17th, a Kenya Airways crash on May 5th and an Adam Air Indonesia crash off Ujung Pandang on January 1st, ACRO said.
It recorded 34 accidents in the United States, 10 in Canada, 8 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 5 in Colombia and 5 in Indonesia.
Official figures from the US have revealed increasing flight delays, millions of lost bags and planes that have never been so packed.
In the year to October, flights operated by the top 20 US airlines arrived at least 15 minutes late or were cancelled about 26% of the time (the second-worst performance since 1995), according to Bureau of Transportation statistics.
