Feds find Beech B23 near Bagdad
NTSB investigators said Tuesday they found the uninjured man who abandoned a single-engine plane he crash-landed in Bagdad this past Saturday.

The pilot, 56-year-old Raymond Hale of Paradise, Texas, took off from 29 Palms, Calif., Saturday planning to land at Ernest A. Love Field in Prescott.

However, because of heavy crosswinds in the skies around Bagdad, Hale crashed his Beech B23 plane 100 yards south of the Bagdad Airport.

After landing, a Bagdad- area resident offered Hale a ride to Prescott, where Hale arranged his return to Texas.

NTSB spokesman Jim Struhsaker told the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, which conducted the initial search for the plane Saturday night, that the difficult landing damaged the aircraft but did not injure Hale.

Hale, who bought the plane from a California resident, got a FAA ferry permit, which allowed him to make a single-purpose flight to a repair complex for additional work before getting full certification.

NTSB officials tracked down Hale after finding the ferry permit and learning more details about the crash.

The plane's hard landing set off the aircraft's emergency locator, something Hale did not realize at the time.

In a non-injury plane crash, the feds require notification within 10 days of an accident. The NTSB's contact with Hale met this requirement.

Struhsaker said Hale now is arranging to recover the plane.
