| Helicopter narrowly avoids disaster |
Federal investigators were to conduct an investigation Monday after a Lifesaver helicopter taking an accident victim to a hospital hit a power line near Ironaton Baptist Church and was forced to land in a field.
Talladega County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Jimmy Kilgore said nobody was injured in the accident, which happened at about 13:15 Saturday near the end of Ironaton Road.
Kilgore said the helicopter was responding to a call after a man was injured seriously in a four-wheel accident.
The helicopter's forced landing occurred when the pilot was taking off to transport the patient to a hospital. The helicopter's tail rotor apparently hit the lower power line, snapping the line as it became entangled in the back rotor. The pilot managed to control the helicopter and lowered it safely back onto the ground.
Another Lifesaver helicopter was called in, and the accident victim was transported to a hospital.
