| Jetliner blew tire on takeoff in El Paso |
A US Airways flight carrying 86 passengers and 4 crew members made an emergency landing at El Paso International Airport on Tuesday after it blew a tire during takeoff.
Airport officials reported that Flight 2937 from El Paso to Phoenix took off about 09:30. While it was rolling for takeoff, one of its four rear tires blew out.
Pat Abeln, director of aviation at the airport, said the pilot contacted the control tower, and they discussed the mechanical problem. The pilot then circled the airport for about an hour to burn fuel to make the plane lighter for landing.
The plane touched back down about 10:26 on the airport's longest runway, which had been closed to allow for maintenance work. The maintenance work was stopped because of the emergency.
No injuries were reported, said Lt. Mario Hernandez of the El Paso Fire Department.
Passengers said nobody panicked after the pilot informed them of the mechanical problem. "Even the children were calm," said one of the passengers.
