| Double Compensation for Bumped Passengers |
The Transportation Department announced Wednesday it shall double the limits airlines are required to pay passengers when they are denied boarding due to overbooking.
Bumped passengers now receive $200 if they are re-routed to reach their destination within two hours for domestic flights, and $800 for longer delays in reaching their final destination. The limits will also now apply to flights seating 30 people or more, instead of the previous threshold of 60.
"We are taking steps to improve the travel experience, cut delays and lower fares in one of America's busiest aviation markets," Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said in a press release.
