Pilot Reports / Rose Marie Kern
“Flight Watch, N3RK just east of Marfa, with a pilot report, over”

“N3RK, Albuquerque Flight Watch, go ahead pilot report”

“N3RK is a Cherokee at one one thousand five hundred, we have had moderate turbulence from El Paso to Marfa, and just started getting some severe jolts as we got closer to Marfa, we descended to seven thousand five hundred and it are just getting some light turbulence at this altitude”

Radar Discussion – Velocity Azimuth Display / Rose Marie Kern
The Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD), is a National Weather Service (NWS) radar product little used in fixed wing aviation, but familiar to balloonists or anyone flying low. It is a tool that pilots and flight service specialists can use to provide critical information concerning low level wind shear and provides data about changes in wind flow patterns during a climb to higher altitudes.

ATC Training / Rose Marie Kern
Just about any professional probably gets annoyed when they watch a movie or TV series that touches on their profession – and the details are just plain wrong. Take the movie “Die Hard”. Supposedly a group of terrorists are able to hack into the ATC approach control at Washington Dulles Airport. They proceed to turn off the frequencies for a lot of aircraft who are in a holding pattern – then the audience is supposed to assume all pilots are stupid enough to hold for nearly an hour without talking to ATC.

Extended Flights / Rose Marie Kern
Pilots planning to fly for an extended period of time frequently need to choose whether to file several flight plans or one long one. Which is better? The answer depends on the situation and, to some extent the reason flight plans are filed to begin with.

The Dreaded TFR / Rose Marie Kern
Temporary Flight Restrictions, or TFRs are becoming the most dreaded portion of a pilot briefing. Frequently a pilot will call and say that the only thing he wants to know is if there are any TFRs between his departure and his destination.

IFR Clearance Delivery / Rose Marie Kern
SCENARIO
Pilot uses the pilot briefing line to file an IFR flight plan and immediately requests clearance from Farmington to Springfield.

Your friendly pilot briefer files him from FMN to SGF, then calls Denver Center.  Denver gives him the clearance and the pilot hangs up and departs right away.

What is wrong with this scenario?  The briefer was in New Mexico but the pilot was calling from Missouri and going to Kentucky!

This type of mistake has already caused some scary separation errors.

Flight Plan Problem Solving / Rose Marie Kern
How many times have you filed a flight plan – with either the Direct Access User Terminal System (DUATS) or Automated Flight Service (AFSS) and when you attempt to get your clearance or activate the plan – it just isn’t there? This is a situation that is highly annoying not just to the pilot, but to ATC people as well.

Who Should I Call? / Rose Marie Kern
Hi Rose Marie, Thanks for writing those very beneficial articles for us pilots. I could surely use an article about how to best use AFSS and what services they afford us. For instance, I decide to fly from my home base at KALM to Angel Fire or Taos, NM. What is the best way to decide who to talk to on my trip? ATC Bibles - ATC Reference Materials / Rose Marie Kern
Every sector of aviation has a guide, a reference, a “Bible” that defines the rules and regulations we work by, and usually several supplemental documents that allow for regional variations.

Crossing the Border - To Mexico! / Rose Marie Kern
Anyone heading out of the country for the first time is faced with a lot of “do this don’t do that” regulations that get to be a tad confusing. Especially since there are different regulations for flying out of the United States, than there are for returning.
